Description of Ministries:
We are 501(c)3 non-profit corporation focused exclusively on providing resources for the Sisters of the Child Jesus, a local diocesan order of nuns with headquarters in Kasama, Zambia, working primarily children and families impacted by the HIV/AIDS pandemic in the Northern Province of Zambia.
Description of fundraising efforts (if any):
We have been soliciting donations in the South Puget Sound area, primarily in Pierce County, from individuals who have met Sister Baptista Kaoma when she was studying here. These efforts include a quarterly Newsletter, sale of Zambian arts and crafts at local fair trade markets and a dinner sponsored by the Knights of Columbus of St. Patrick Parish. We are now beginning to expand awareness and fund raising by means of small in-home gatherings. We also are seeking grants as well.
Collaboration with individuals or groups outside of the parish/community:
We are not a parish organization even though several of our Board members are active in St. Leo and St. Rita parishes in Tacoma. We have also established a working relationship with three Rotary Clubs in Tacoma as well as Kasama, Zambia, and Rotary International for a water project. We have partnered with the Tacoma Dominicans and St. Patrick Parish Knights of Columbus for special events.
Describe visits (if any) between your parish/community and your African Partners:
Sister Baptista Kaoma, SCJ, was studying and working in Tacoma for the year 2007-08 and was instrumental in developing local interest in the work of her Order. Bruce and Paula Foreman, our president and secretary, spent 16 days in Zambia visiting most of the projects staffed by the Sisters of the Child Jesus in the Northern Province in September 2008. We are committed to annual visits
How is your ministry organized and run:
We are a non-profit corporation In the State of Washington (registered May 23, 2008), approved by the Internal Revenue Service as a 501(c)3 organization (confirmed September, 2008). We have a Board of eight members (seeking a ninth). Our first annual meeting will be held May 30, 2009 at the Dominican Center in Tacoma. We receive an annual listing of priorities from the Sisters in Zambia and transmit funds for these priorities on a quarterly basis.
